Last updated: January 08, 2021

The mobile telecommunication industry is an ever-expanding one. The smartphone industry in similar purview is ever-emerging as well as dynamic. Although it seemed to be saturated, it appeared not to be a problem as the industry’s market wants more at every opportunity. Many brands of smartphones visit the global market annually and sometimes within shorter periods. This development only promises to continue so long the increasing importance of smartphones in our newly found digital world continues to rise. Ever wondered as well why there is always something new to be anticipated when topics of smartphones pop up in our world? This is exactly why you need to be intimated with the top phones to watch out for in the brand new year, 2021, and why these phones would be the hotcake in the next 365 days.

First, it is no exaggeration to state that a lot of factors culminate into why there is always an expectation when it comes to mobile phones. There is certainly a ready global market for smartphones. This has therefore created an intense competition among manufacturers as to who controls the larger sales volume. It is safe to say that this competition has over the years mean well for smartphone users anyway. It is the reasons you have new mobiles from your brands with entirely new features or upgrade on the previous models almost annually.

A lot of smartphone brands have demonstrated class and consistency while others have only been able to manage their class. Whichever way, we have carefully selected the top ten phones to watch out for in 2021. Hopefully, your favorite brand will be included, and maybe it will combine both class and consistency to offer you even more technological advancement in your handheld in the New Year.

Vivo X60

The smartphone industry may have been hit harder than the previous years in 2020 because of the unexpected pandemic that among many other negatives caused the postponement of the Mobile World Congress till June 2021, many mobile manufacturers have still been able to rework their launch strategies.

Thankfully, Covid-19 has not hit the smartphone market as feared. The market has seen some exciting releases in 2020 already. But guess what, there are still more in packs for the year that will be taken into 2021.

Vivo recently confirmed its X60 series will be launching in China on the 29th of December. This means that the phone will go on sale in January, and may likely not hit the Europe and American market until 2021 if there is a plan for export.

Leaks from Tech Advisor suggests that three or four phones are expected. It was further disclosed that careful look at a couple of them suggest that the phone will have 48 megapixel camera setups in company of wide-angle and portrait lenses as well as a 5x periscope on the Pro version. Also, Zeiss is suggested to have provided special coating on the lens.

Vivo X60 is expected to run on Samsung’s first 5nm chipset- Exynos 1080, and it’s obvious OringinOS (introduced on November 18, 2020 as a replacement of FuntouchOS with new gestures, more interactive widgets and a number of visual changes). The phone is specifically designed with a triple-cam setup, zero periscope lens and a single punch hole on the front. It comes in three colors that include white, black and bluish gradient.

Since there is no information yet about the global rollout schedule for Vivo X60, it is generally assumed that this will be after a month or two as that is the common schedule after Chinese mobile release. All indications including the master features of this mobile reveal that it is undoubtedly going to be one of the very top phones to watch out for in 2021.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 4

The smartphone world rumor (which usually end up being true) has it that Xiaomi is planning to break the rhythm of its Mi Mix series by pivoting to the wrap around concept device Mi Mix Alpha. Nonetheless, expectations are high on a possibility of a proper Mi Mix 4 in 2021. Not many facts are known yet about the anticipated mobile device but it is believed that the phone will either be another wrap around screen or Xiaomi is willing to unveil its proper foldable phone.

In a new twist to the news that the mobile is yet to be launched and that not much is known about it yet, “Gadgets Now” has revealed otherwise. The phone was said to be unveiled unofficially in Indian on 13th of July 2020 with clearer details about its specification. Xiaomi Mi Mix 4 is said to run on Android v9.0 (Pie) operating system, powered by Octa core processor that include:

  • 2.96 GHz, Single core
  • Kryo 485 + 2.42 GHz
  • Tri core, Kryo 485 + 1.8 GHz
  • Quad core, Kryo 485

And Further, the phone whose internal storage and RAM storage are 128GB and 6GB respectively is said to run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 Plus Chipset. It has an AMOLED display with a screen resolution of 1440 x 3120 pixels and 537 ppi pixel density. The phone is reported to have a battery power of 4500mAh and a number of connectivity features that include WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, Volte, and more. The phone is perhaps a mobile video studio, having a front camera of 32MP, primary rear camera of 108 MP + 16 MP + 12 MP + 8 MP and exquisite features like face detection, touch to focus, auto flash and digital zoom.

If this revelation by “Gadgets Now” is anything to go with, then we may expect an official unveiling of the touted mobile video studio in 2021. Surely, it will be one of the beast to rock in the New Year.

Nokia 7.3 5G

One of the biggest news that rocked our world and the smartphone industry in 2020 is the introduction of 5G network. From series of white paper analysis to theories and conspiracies, there were a lot all over the place concerning it. One good news eventually is that we can be proud of a better and faster network in our world today with the 5G network and a number of phone already released to use the connectivity.

Microsoft is no doubt a force in the mobile phone industry. It is therefore looking to add another affordable option of 5G phone to the market. The rumored addition will use the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 5G hardware or MediaTek Dimensity. Nokia has itself earlier confirmed that it is working on more affordable 5G devices on its new Qualcomm hardware in the future. This may just be one of it.

According to NokiaPowerUser, the leaked features of this highly anticipated smart handheld device include a display size of greater than 6.3inches with full HD+ resolution and pure display branding. Users are also to expect a 24 megapixel selfie camera and 48 megapixel rear Quad-camera. The phone will be available in a range of RAM 4, 6 and 8GB, and the phone is expected to be powered by a Snapdragon 690 processor. Given the outlined leaked specification, the Nokia 7.3 5G phone will be worth your while if you’re looking for a new intense design mobile with a promise of better connectivity. It is worth being on your list of the top ten phones to watch out for in 2021.

Apple iPhone 13

There shouldn’t be an argument about this. It is the culture of iPhone to move unto the next every year. Since iPhone 12 was the last release, it automatically means that we all can be thinking about iPhone 13 series already.

Judging from occurrences of the past, Apple leaves us all with a benefit of perfect assumption about iPhone 13 release date. New iPhones usually launch in September of every year. Although iPhone 12 took a different twist as it launched a bit later in October, we can still treat the difference as associated with the hard occurrences of the year 2020 and so predict iPhone 13 to come out in the autumn of 2021.

As always, you can expect new features, and more likely new looks on the next iPhone. It will most likely come in a range of four phones too, and you can expect all to be powered by a new A15 bionic processor.

Rumors have it that a more radical shift is probably looming with smaller notch, 120Hz display, return of touch ID, 1TB storage, and a possibility of Magsafe Charging since apple has been planning to become entirely port-less over a long period. Product reviewers have however said that Magsafe charging could be a feature for iPhone 14 and beyond instead.

We can only keep our fingers crossed and expect apple to perform another magic as it is the company’s deed annually. One thing is however entirely certain. We can expect to be wowed as always as we wait for one of the most respected mobile phone brands to serve us all with another dose of new features and lovable luxuries. iPhone 13 would definitely be a hit on the list of top ten phones to watch-out for in 2021.

Google Pixel 6

We may just have seen Google Pixel 5 recently released on the 30th of September but time stands no still at the side of any mobile phone. A successor is usually on the cart from the day of release.

There is a possibility for a benefit of assumptions here too since it is Google’s culture to release a new Pixel flagship every autumn. It is therefore reasonable to expect Google Pixel 6 in the autumn of 2021.

It is yet unknown at least for now what to expect but a jump to a 129Hz refresh rate seem reasonable and plausible at the same time. Google will probably want to upgrade its main camera sensor too since it has remained unchanged for a few years now. This is predicted because it is believed that Google will want to cling to its photographic reputation.

Another leak surrounding users’ anticipation of Google pixel 6 is the device known as Pixel XE. It is however yet unclear if this is just a codename for Pixel 6, a new phone or something fake. We will surely provide more update on this immediately the myth is busted.

The design of the new phone is perhaps unpredictable. This is because google has gone through a few different designs for its previous Pixel phones every year. It however wouldn’t be surprising if google stick with its 90Hz AMOLED screen, or at best step up to 120HZ panel. Users would also likely love to see google upgrade to three rear cameras that include wide, ultra-wide and telephoto sensors in one body. Whichever way, since pixel five is a fantastic phone, we are expectation nothing shy of a more fantastic device that will beat the marks of pixel 5. We therefore think that Google Pixel 6 is going to be one of the top ten phones to watch out for in 2021.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3

Samsung is realistically one of the most sought-after brands in the smartphone industry. Many thanks have to go to the company’s innovation, creativity, consistency and ability to stand the test of time for this enviable feat. Foldable phone may have just began in the November of 2018, Samsung has since tapped into the innovation and produced a couple of phones with this special feature.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 may just have been released on the 18th of September 2020, but there is already a high level of expectation under Samsung’s foldable phone umbrella, and the most anticipated has to be Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3.

The phone is expected to pick up where Fold 2 left off. However, rumors have it that S Pen stylus support will be added to it alongside a potential invisible under-display selfie camera inside the phone. Further, this phone is expected to launch in the company of a more affordable foldable phone that may be called Z Fold S or Z Fold Scroll.

Samsung discussed its plan on releasing a thinner and lighter foldable device in its Investors Forum earlier held in 2020. Rumors have therefore fueled that the company was probably talking about Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3. There are other indications that users can expect small upgrades which are likely to see outer cameras, new processor, or Samsung may even introduce a new color with a new generation. Whichever way, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is expected to be a more subtle improvement and refinement over the previous foldable phones from Samsung. And because Samsung has always given us all the best of smartphones, we can always watch-out for Fold 3 as one of the top phones of 2021.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2

Would you expect the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 to launch for sale in September 2020 and get frozen out of the market for a new introduction in 2021? That would be the joke of the century. That said, we expect the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 to remain one of the superpower mobile smartphone of 2021.

This mobile is perhaps all you ever wanted for a phone with every bit of its features and specifications. Its 7.60-inch touchscreen primary display accompanied by a resolution of 1768x2208 is a bomb of the invention. It also features a 6.20 inch touchscreen as its second display, this time with a resolution of 816x2260 pixels. The mobile is powered by the most recent and in-use Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 865+ processor with a RAM of 12GB and an internal storage of 256GB. What about its 5G network connectivity feature? Awesome!

This powerful phone runs on Android 10, and it is powered by a 4500mAh non-removable battery. Another special feature of the phone is that it supports wireless charging and has a proprietary fast charging function. Its connectivity features include WLAN, GPS, USB Type-C 3.2, NFC and Bluetooth. Other important features that stand the mobile out are its side-mounted fingerprint, compass, barometer, accelerometer, gyro, proximity and Samsung DeX, a desktop experience support for the device. Truly, the Samsung Galaxy Z fold 2 is designed to change the shape of the future. You have simply got a lot to take into 2021 with this super-packed device. It is surely one of the top ten phones to watch out for in the New Year.

LG Velvet 2

LG is one of the best brand names to think about when it comes to electronics. It has been doing so greatly in the areas of smartphone too. Over the years, LG have added great smartphones to its rank. Up till 2020, we can categorically speak of LG V60 ThinQ 5G, LG Wing 5G, LG G8X ThinQ and LG Velvet among others as the most popular models. The LG Velvet obviously stands out with a striking design characterized with premium features and a giant leap in terms of 5G performance. As good as this may seem, it is perhaps time to expect an upgrade on the LG Velvet which was only released in May 2020.

LG Velvet is stylish, sleek and stunning. LG Velvet 2 will be even more in each case. While the LG Velvet is expected to continue to be a force of smartphone into 2021, LG Velvet 2 is perhaps an expectation that will steal the show in the New Year. Apart from the fact that people will normally want to have a feel of new devices, rumors and news about the upgrade on this device makes it worth every hype that surrounds it.

With a reiteration of the plan to launch a new device with a flexible display, LG Velvet 2 is certainly a device for the future. This phone is expected to be a rollable and new flagship device. A launch for the device is expected to be in March 2021. Normally, we would have expected the device be launched in the Mobile World Congress but since the same has been postponed till late June 2021, the device would already have been launched.

The device is expected to be codenamed as Rainbow, and it will exist as on the same level as LG’s V series devices. Still, the smartphone will sit on the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 875 that will be announced in December 2020. Overall, it is a masterclass and firepower of a device. There is every reason to include it as one of the top ten phones to watch out for in 2021.

OnePlus Nord 2/SE

OnePlus Nord might not be so popular a mobile phone brand when compared to the top dogs in the industry, but you will agree with me that OnePlus is a class on its own. Nord N10 is a rocket and N100 is a dynamite. However, we all cannot wait to see the bomb waiting to happen in a true successor to the mid0range Nord phone in 2021. And so, all eyes are on the OnePlus Nord 2/SE to do the magic.

Unfortunately, there has not been any significant leak about the device yet, but tech enthusiasts are perhaps expecting a jump from 90Hz refresh rate to 120Hz. An upgrade of the 65W fast charging as characteristics of the OnePlus8T would be expected. It has also been suggested that a throw in of Android 11 and a new processor would make the Nord 2 device very tempting. We can just all wait to see the king unveiled, but it certainly promises to be one of the top ten to watch out for in 2021.

New Blackberry Phone H1

And the dead is risen... Yes, with a lot of expectations from lovers. The company may have gone on an innovation break but the US Company, Onward Mobility in august 2020 licensed the name and announced ongoing plans to release a completely new device in the first half of 2021. According to the named company, the new Blackberry device will have 5G network capabilities, and of course a characteristics physical keyboard. That may have shown some of Blackberry’s resistance to change in terms of full cover screen but we will definitely all wait to see what point it wants to prove. There are no rumors and news yet aside from the specs and that the phone will be running on Android. Also, an announcement of partnership existence that has been made is important. But of course, every Blackberry lovers again have something to look out for in 2021 after a long time. The invention might persuade other mobile brand lovers to try Blackberry device too. This is definitely a device to anticipate, hence its inclusion in our list of the top ten phones to watch out for in 2021.
